LADY HAWKS CLIPPED BY BETHUNE-COOKMAN

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - In their first of two matchups in the Sunshine State, the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) Women's Basketball Team were clipped by the Bethune-Cookman Lady Wildcats, 75-65, inside the Historic Moore Gymnasium. With the setback, the Lady Hawks fell to 6-10 (3-3 MEAC) overall whereas Bethune-Cookman improved to 7-13 (4-3 MEAC) on the season.

Maryland Eastern Shore scored 21 points on 14 Lady Wildcats' turnovers while shooting 85-percent (17-of-20) from the charity stripe. Senior guards Jessica Long (Fort Washington, Md.) and Shawnee Sweeney (Chester, Va.) led the Hawk attack. Long notched a game-high 20 points, six boards, and five steals. Sweeney made five long balls (5-of-8) and ended her afternoon with 19 points in the loss.

In the second half, UMES regained the advantage after halftime with back-to-back freebies from Long, 33-31. Moments later, the Lady Wildcats took the lead after a made jumper by Kailyn Williams, 37-36. At 16:16, Bethune-Cookman was ahead, 40-36, until the Lady Hawks went on an 8-0 run to reclaim the lead, 44-40. Consecutive buckets from the Lady Wildcats tied the contest, 44-44, with more than 13 minutes remaining. Over the next six minutes, both squads went back-and-forth to take the lead. Bethune-Cookman regained the advantage after a made free-throw from Emily Williams, 57-56, at the 6:49 mark. Down the stretch, Maryland Eastern Shore was unable to retake the lead as the Lady Wildcats ended the game on an 18-9 run to win, 75-65.

Other notable Hawk performances included Moengaroa Subritzky (Auckland, New Zealand) recording another double-double, posting 14 points and 12 rebounds.



Maryland Eastern Shore opened the game on an 8-2 run, sparked by Long and Sweeney, before the first media timeout. UMES continued to be on the offensive attack as they increased the lead to double-digits, 21-10, with 10:30 left before intermission. In the next seven minutes, the Lady Wildcats gradually chipped away at the deficit. With more than three minutes remaining before halftime, the Lady Hawks held a five-point advantage, 29-24. Bethune-Cookman made one final charge as they closed out the half on an 8-2 spurt to tie the game, 31-31.

Four Lady Wildcats earned double-figures, led by Jasmine Knowles. Knowles paced Bethune-Cookman with a team-high 17 points. Kendra Cooper added 16 points, including four three-pointers, while Kayla Crawford and Emily Williams combined for 23 points in the victory.

This Monday (01/26), the Lady Hawks end their Sunshine State road trip in Tallahassee, Fla. to face the Florida A&M Rattlers. Tipoff is set for 6 p.m.
