TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - In their second and final Sunshine State road contest, the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) Women's Basketball Team fell to the Florida A&M Rattlers, 64-54, inside the Al Lawson Center. With the setback, the Lady Hawks dropped to 6-11 (3-4 MEAC) on the season whereas Florida A&M moved to 6-13 (3-4 MEAC) overall.
Maryland Eastern Shore's bench outscored their counterparts, 18-2, led by junior Taylor Thompson (Chapel Hill, N.C.). Thompson posted a season-high 12 points, including 10 points after intermission. Senior guard Jessica Long (Fort Washington, Md.) had a team-high 17 points on 53-percent shooting (8-of-15) from the floor.
UMES scored the first four points in the second half to cut the deficit to single-digits, 29-20. Florida A&M regained the momentum as they went on a 10-3 spurt to give them their largest lead of the game, 39-23, with less than 14 minutes remaining. Over the next six minutes, the Lady Hawks chipped away and trimmed the deficit to single-digits again, 43-34, after a layup by Long. Within the next two minutes, the Rattlers ballooned the lead back to 13 points, 48-35, with 6:02 left in the game. Maryland Eastern Shore cut the deficit as low as six, 51-45, with two minutes remaining, but Florida A&M nailed several freebies down the stretch to win, 64-54.
Other notable Hawk performances included Taryana Kelly (Brunswick, N.J.) notching a game-high 11 boards (seven offensive) while newcomer Moengaroa Subritzky (Auckland, New Zealand) added eight points in the loss.
Florida A&M opened the game on an 8-0 run until a long ball from Shauntesha Bryant (Syracuse, N.Y.) ended UMES' scoring drought, 8-3. Maryland Eastern Shore was unable to hit shots as the Rattlers increased their lead to double-digits, 17-3. Midway through the first period, the Lady Hawks made a run as they went on a 9-2 spurt, 19-12, with 11:38 remaining before halftime. Maryland Eastern Shore could not get any closer as the Rattlers ended the half on a 10-4 run, 29-16.
For the Rattlers, Olivia Antilla tallied a game-high 22 points while shooting 62-percent (8-of-13) from the field. Alicia Jones and Khaderja Young combined for 27 points in the victory.
On Jan. 31, the Lady Hawks return to the William P. Hytche Athletic Center to take on in-state rival Coppin State. Tipoff is scheduled for 2 p.m.
