PRINCESS ANNE, Md. - With more than six minutes remaining in the game, the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) Women's Basketball Team rallied to knock off Coppin State University (CSU), 66-58, inside the William P. Hytche Athletic Center. With the victory, the Lady Hawks snapped a three-game skid. Furthermore, UMES ended an eight-game losing streak against the Eagles, dating back to the 2010-11 season.
Maryland Eastern Shore (7-11, 4-4 MEAC) outrebounded the Eagles, 47-40, led by junior Alexis Udoji (Randolph, Mass.). In a reserve role, Udoji notched her 15th career 10-plus rebound performance, posting a game-high 10 boards. Additionally, UMES' bench squad outscored the opposition, 29-16, sparked by junior TeAmber Burke (Washington, N.C.). Burke recorded 12 points in 20 minutes of action in the win.
UMES doubled their halftime advantage after a long ball from Moengaroa Subritzky (Auckland, New Zealand), 36-30, but the Eagles made a run. At the 13:49 mark, Coppin State went on a 9-2 run to regain the lead, 39-32. UMES tied the game multiple times, but could not get over the hump. After being tied, 48-48, the Eagles created separation and reclaimed the lead, 54-49. Within a minute, the Lady Hawks erased the deficit to take the lead after a steal and layup from Jessica Long (Fort Washington, Md.), 55-54. In the final five minutes, Maryland Eastern Shore clamped down on defense and ended the contest on an 11-4 spurt to win, 66-58.
Long had a game-high 17 points, including 7-of-10 from the charity stripe while posting a season-high seven steals. In her efforts, she moved from 11th to ninth on the UMES all-time steal leaderboard, surpassing Tiffany Reid (2006-09) and Angela Fowler (1990-92). Also, the Fort Washington-native notched her 32nd consecutive game with at least an assist while moving into sixth on the UMES all-time assist list, succeeding Peggy Edwards (1990-93).
Other notable Hawk performance included Subritzky, reigning Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Rookie of the Week, chipping in 10 points and three boards in the victory.
Coppin State held an early advantage, 7-5, until junior Chalyse Taylor (Louisville, Ky.) nailed a long ball to give UMES their first lead of the game, 8-7. At the 12:01 mark, both squads were tied, 11-11, until Maryland Eastern Shore scored six unanswered points capped off by a three-pointer by Burke, 17-11. Within the next three minutes, Coppin State regained the lead after a 10-1 spurt, 21-18. In the final moments before intermission, the Lady Hawks recaptured the lead and held a halftime advantage, 31-28.
For the Eagles (3-15, 2-5 MEAC), Genesis Lucas scored a team-high 12 points, five assists, five boards and three steals. Amber Griffin added 10 points and four rebounds in a losing effort.
On Monday (02/02), the Lady Hawks hit the road to our Nation's Capital to square off against the Howard Lady Bison inside Burr Gymnasium. The contest begins a three-game road trip. Tipoff is set for 5:30 p.m.
