Jan. 5, 2015 PRINCESS ANNE, Md. - Sophomore track runner Khalil Rmidi Kinini (Malaga, Spain) and junior women's basketball forward Alexis Udoji (Randolph, Mass.) were named the University of Maryland Eastern Shore Peninsula Regional Medical Center Athletes of the Week for the week ending on January 5th. Rmidi Kinini is being named for the sixth time while Udoji is being named for the third time.
Rmidi Kinini broke his second indoor track record this season, knocking down a three year old UMES record in the mile run last Saturday at the Coach O Invitational. He ran the race at a clip of 4:13.08, which was a full three seconds faster than the 2011 mark set by Mustapha Habbani. Back in December at the Navy Invite, Rmidi Kinini also broke his own school record in the 3000 meter run.
Udoji has become accustomed to posting double-double figures in basketball games this season, but she had to work extra hard to earn her fourth on the year last Tuesday against Monmouth. After getting into early foul trouble, Udoji only played four minutes in the first half with just one rebound to her credit. However she battled back in the second half, going 9-of-10 from the field, adding four foul shots, and picking up nine more rebounds to finish with 22 points and 10 boards in the 86-73 UMES victory.
Rmidi Kinini and the men's track team will travel to Annapolis for a second Navy Invite on January 10th, while Udoji and the rest of the women's hoops squad will take the week off before reopening MEAC play against Morgan State in Baltimore on January 12th.
