PRINCESS ANNE, Md. - On the opening night of the college basketball season, the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) Women's Basketball team came up short as they dropped their season opener against the Georgetown Hoyas, 71-60, inside the William P. Hytche Athletic Center.
Before the game, the Hawk family recognized its all-time winningest coach, Fred Batchelor, with a presentation to celebrate his 25th year of collegiate coaching. Coach Batchelor received numerous gifts and celebrated with friends, family, coaching staff, administrators, and current and former players.
As for the game, Maryland Eastern Shore (0-1) struggled in the first half, but found their groove in the second. After shooting 23-percent from the floor in the first two quarters, the Lady Hawks regrouped in the third and fourth quarters as they shot nearly 45-percent from the floor. The club ended the night shooting nearly 35-percent.
Senior guard TeAmber Burke (Washington, N.C.) spearheaded the Hawk attack, posting a team-high 15 points all in the second half. Burke gave UMES the spark they needed to keep the contest close in the third and sophomore Moengaroa Subritzky (Auckland, New Zealand) made spectacular plays down the stretch to pull the game within one-possession late. Subritzky filled the stat sheet as she registered eight points, eight dimes, and seven boards.
Two freebies from Georgetown's Dorothy Adomako extended the Hoyas lead back to double-figures early, 32-21, but UMES stormed back in the third. After sophomore guard Alexus Hicks (Raleigh, N.C.) drilled a long ball to bring the game back to single digits, Burke took over.
The Tar Hill native scored the Lady Hawks' next nine points, including a tray ball at the 5:45 mark to pull the game within two points, 35-33. Georgetown answered with a 10-2 run and pushed their advantage back to 10 points, 45-35. Nearly 20 seconds later, freshman guard Ciani Byrom (Winston-Salem, N.C.) sunk a three-pointer and made the deficit seven, 45-38, but two free-throws from the Hoyas Logan Battle forced a nine-point hole going into the fourth, 47-38.
Georgetown held a 10-point advantage, 51-41, with more than eight minutes left, but Maryland Eastern Shore refused to give up. Subritzky's creativity made the difference as she penetrated the Hoyas' defense. Within the next five minutes, Georgetown found their lead dwindle down to a one-possession game after Subritzky dished off to sophomore forward Shauntesha Bryant (Syracuse, N.Y.), 60-57. Despite the rally, Maryland Eastern Shore was unable to complete the comeback as the Hoyas closed out the game on an 11-3 run to win, 71-60.
Other notable Lady Hawks included Hicks tallying 10 points on 3-of-6 shooting from beyond the arc. Bryant played 29 minutes in a reserve role and finished with seven points and five rebounds in a losing effort.
Trailing 17-7 after one, Georgetown ballooned the lead to 12 points on multiple occasions, but the Lady Hawks fought back. Bryant's long ball made the contest an eight-point game, 21-13, with less than seven minutes before intermission. Within moments, the Hoyas extended the margin back to double-digits after Battle's three-pointer, 25-13. At the 2:49 mark, reigning Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Defensive Player of the Year Alexis Udoji (Randolph, Mass.) made to freebies and put UMES within striking distance. Then, Subritkzy's layup made it seven, but Georgetown's Dorothy Adomako scored to make the halftime score 30-21.
For the Hoyas (1-0), Adomako recorded a game-high 23 points and seven boards. Katie McCormick and Faith Woodard combined for 25 points on 9-of-17 shooting from the floor in the victory.
This Sunday (Nov. 15), the Lady Hawks host USC-Upstate at the Hytche Center. Tipoff is scheduled for 2 p.m.
