OFFENSIVE WOES DOWN LADY HAWKS

Nov. 19, 2015

Box Score

BOSTON - In their first road contest of the season, the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) Women's Basketball team were defeated by the Northeastern Huskies, 60-49, inside the Cabot Center.

With the loss, Maryland Eastern Shore dropped to 1-2 overall while Northeastern moved to 3-0 on the season.

Similar to their game against Georgetown, the Lady Hawks could not find any offensive rhythm in the first half; however, heated up after intermission. After shooting only 19-percent (6-of-31) from the floor in the first two quarters, UMES got hot in the final two quarters. After the 15-minute break, Maryland Eastern Shore shot over 46-percent (13-of-28) from the field.

Senior guard TeAmber Burke (Washington, N.C.) scored all 13 points in the second half, a team-high. Freshman guard Ciani Byrom (Winston-Salem, N.C.) added 11 points off the bench in a losing effort.

UMES outscored the Huskies in the third quarter, 21-12, after opening the quarter on a 13-2 run. After three quarters of play, Maryland Eastern Shore found themselves within striking distances, 45-36. Senior forward Taylor Thompson (Chapel Hill, N.C.) nailed a jumper and made the deficit seven, 47-40, but Northeastern's Maureen Taggart drilled a long ball to put the game back to double-digits, 50-40. The comeback would fall short as the Lady Hawks would fall, 60-49.

Other notable Hawks included Moengaroa Subritzky (Auckland, New Zealand) registering 10 points and five boards while Massachusetts native Alexis Udoji (Randolph) grabbed 11 rebounds, a career-high four steals, and two blocks in her return home.

Both squads were deadlocked, 9-9, after a jumper from Keyera Eaton (Winston Salem, N.C.). Within the waning moments in the first, Byrom made a three-pointer and trimmed the margin down to one, 14-13, but a buzzer-beating jumper from Taggart gave the Huskies a three-point advantage after one, 16-13.

The second quarter would be difference in the contest as the Huskies outscored UMES, 17-2, and took an eighteen-point lead into halftime, 33-15.

For the Huskies, 2015-16 All-CAA Preseason selection Samantha DeFreese recorded a double-double with 10 points and 10 boards. Taggart and Gabriella Giacone came off the bench and gave a spark, combining for 27 points on a perfect 5-of-5 from behind the arc.

On Sunday (Nov. 22), the Lady Hawks wrap up their brief two-game road trip in Cincinnati where the Xavier Musketeers await. Tipoff is set for 2 p.m.
