CINCINNATI ÃÆ'Æ'Æ'ÃÆ'ââ'¬Â '¢ÃÆ'Æ'Æ'¢'¬" In their second matchup against a Big East foe, the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) Women's Basketball team rallied from a 14-point deficit, but came up short as the Xavier Musketeers held on to win, 61-56, inside the Cintas Center.
With the setback, Maryland Eastern Shore falls to 1-3 overall while Xavier improves to 2-1 on the season.
In the box score, UMES outscored Xavier in the paint, 32-14, and had fewer turnovers, 15-6. After a tough shooting first half, the Lady Hawks rebounded and shot 43-percent (16-of-37) from the field, including 6-of-11 from downtown.
Guard Moengaroa Subritzky (Auckland, New Zealand) finished with a team-high 17 points after shooting 7-of-13 from the floor. Senior guard TeAmber Burke (Washington, N.C.) played 37 minutes and contributed with 15 points and six boards in a losing effort.
Sophomore guard Alexus Hicks (Raleigh, N.C.) drilled a three-pointer and cut the deficit down to six points, 32-26, with 3:39 remaining in the third. Xavier responded with a 13-5 run to boost their advantage back to double-digits with less than a minute left in the quarter. Senior center Taryana Kelly (North Brunswick, N.J.) scored the final three points in the quarter to pull the Lady Hawks within striking distance, 45-34.
Ciani Byrom (Winston-Salem, N.C.) drilled a three-pointer to begin the fourth and trimmed the margin back to single-digits, 45-37, forcing Xavier to call a timeout. After the brief intermission, the Musketeers' Martha Thompson made a three-pointer and extended their advantage, 48-37, but UMES never gave up. Throughout the quarter, Maryland Eastern Shore made rallies; however, the Musketeers hit big shots when needed. With more than 3 minutes left, Subritzky nailed back-to-back threes and cut the deficit down to five points, 55-50. Next, Alexis Udoji (Randolph, Mass.) made a layup and sliced the margin to three points, 55-52, with 57 ticks remaining. UMES was unable to finish the comeback as Xavier made clutch freebies down the stretch to win, 61-56.
Other notable Hawk performances included Byrom tallying 10 points off the bench while Kelly added seven points and six rebounds in the loss.
Both squads were tied, 6-6, at the 2:34 mark after a layup from the Musketeers' Aliyah Zantt. Xavier reclaimed the lead after two threes, but Byrom scored on a layup to make the deficit four points after one, 12-8. Xavier opened the second quarter on a 10-0 run, 22-8, but UMES rallied as they closed out the half on a 9-4 run to make the halftime score 26-17.
For the Musketeers, Zantt had a game-high 19 points on 6-of-12 shooting from the field. Marquia Turner chipped in 14 points while Leah Schaefer recorded seven points and a game-high 12 boards in the victory.
This Tuesday before Thanksgiving (Nov. 24), the Lady Hawks host Cheyney (Pa.) at the William P. Hytche Athletic Center. Game is slated for 2 p.m., followed by the men at 5:30 p.m.
