PRINCESS ANNE, Md. - In a contest that saw nine lead changes and eight ties, the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) Women's Team fell in overtime against the UMBC Retrievers, 55-52, inside the William P. Hytche Athletic Center. This was the first time in the series' history where the game was decided in extra periods.
Guard Moengaroa Subritzky (Auckland, New Zealand) opened overtime with a long ball, followed by a made free throw from senior center Taryana Kelly (North Brunswick, N.J.), 52-48. For the Lady Hawks, those would be the only points scored in the extra period as the Retrievers recorded the final seven points to win, 55-52.
Defensively, the Lady Hawks (3-8) held UMBC under 29-percent (19-of-67) shooting from the field and less than six-percent (1-of-17) from downtown. Despite the smothering defense, the Retrievers found other ways and keep themselves in the contest.
UMBC scored 20 points off turnovers and registered 21 second chances points. Also, the Retrievers outscored UMES' bench, 23-8.
Subritzky led the way, playing all 45 minutes, a new career-high. The New Zealand native recorded a season-high 18 points, five boards, and two dimes. Senior guard TeAmber Burke (Washington, N.C.) nearly duplicated minutes played as she finished with a career-high 44 minutes of action. Burke tallied 12 points and a season-high eight rebounds in a losing effort.
Midway through the third, Kelly's layup tied the contest, 26-26, but the Retrievers went on an 8-1 spurt and took the lead with more than a minute left, 34-27. Subritzky kept the game close as she scored the final seven points for the Lady Hawks and pulled the squad within four, 36-32.
In the fourth, Subritzky made a pair of free throws and gave UMES the lead back, 37-36, with less than eight minutes left. Minutes later, UMBC's Pandora Wilson drilled a jumper and the Retrievers reclaimed the advantage, 40-39. It was short-lived as consecutive layups from Burke and Alexis Udoji (Randolph, Mass.) gave Maryland Eastern Shore the lead back once again, 43-40, with more than six minutes remaining.
With less than two minutes to go in regulation, the game was deadlocked, 46-46, until Burke made a layup, 48-46. Nearly 30 seconds later, UMBC's Laura Castaldo also made an easy basket and forced overtime, 48-48.
Other notable Hawk performance included freshman guard Ciani Byrom (Winston-Salem, N.C.) providing solid minutes off the bench. Byrom scored her 100th point in her young career and had career highs in minutes played (31), rebounds (8), and assists (4).
Udoji, reigning Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Defensive Player of the Year, filled the stat sheet, finishing with a season-high five blocks, five points, five boards, two steals, and an assist in 38 minutes of play. Furthermore, the Massachusetts product reached another milestone as she surpassed former teammate Shanyce Stewart (2010-2014) in the school's all-time rebounding list. Currently, Udoji sits sixth overall.
Sophomore guard Alexus Hicks (Raleigh, N.C.) made the first field goal of the game with a three-pointer, followed by a layup from Burke, 5-0. UMES opened the contest on a 7-2 run and took a seven-point advantage after one, 12-5.
Midway through the second, UMBC tied the game, 14-14, and took their first lead of the game after Capree Garner's layup, 16-15. With time waning, Maryland Eastern Shore regained the momentum and held a two-point lead into intermission, 20-18.
For the Retrievers (7-3), they shot nearly 89-percent (16-of-18) from the charity stripe. Taylor McCarley led the way, finishing with a game-high 20 points on 12-of-14 shooting from the foul line. Garner notched 14 points and seven boards off the bench while Wilson chipped in a game-high 10 rebounds in the victory.
UMES will have five days until the No. 5 Maryland Terrapins come into town (Dec. 20). Sunday afternoon's showdown begins at 1 p.m. inside the Hytche Center.
