PRINCESS ANNE, Md. - In their first test after the Thanksgiving holidays, the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) Women's Basketball team fell to the Mount St. Mary's Mountaineers, 57-50, at the William P. Hytche Athletic Center. As a result, both squads have duplicate overall records (2-4).
Offensively, the Lady Hawks were unable to find a rhythm as they shot as season-low 29-percent (18-of-63) while committing 17 turnovers. Despite the mistakes, Maryland Eastern Shore outrebounded the Mount, 47-38, and blocked six shots defensively.
Senior guard TeAmber Burke (Washington, N.C.) was the lone Hawk in double-figures, posting a team-high 14 points on 50-percent shooting (2-of-4) from downtown. Sophomore guard Moengaroa Subritzky (Auckland, New Zealand) chipped in seven points, four boards, and two dimes in a losing effort.
Mount St. Mary's tied the contest, 32-32, after a long ball from Alexis Carter and closed out the third quarter on a 14-0 run to take the lead, 43-32. Early into the final quarter, the Mount extended their advantage to 14 points, 46-32, but UMES refused to give up.
Burke tried to keep the Lady Hawks in the game as she scored the next eight points. Senior center Taryana Kelly (North Brunswick, N.J.) made layup and trimmed the margin down to single digits, 50-42, with more the six minutes remaining. In those final six minutes, both squads traded baskets; thus, UMES would fall to the Mount, 57-50.
Other notable Hawk performances included forward Alexis Udoji (Randolph, Mass.) tallying 11 boards, five points, and three blocks. In her efforts, she moved into eighth on the school's all-time rebounding list, surpassing Peggy Edwards and former Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Defensive Player of the Year Kristi Veltkamp.
Kelly also reached a milestone as she is now 10th on the all-time blocks list. On the night, the New Jersey native finished with 10 rebounds, seven points, and three rejections in the loss.
Maryland Eastern Shore opened the contest on an 8-2, capped off by an Udoji three-pointer, and forced the Mount use an early timeout. After one quarter of play, UMES held a 15-7 advantage. Freshman guard Keyera Eaton (Winston-Salem) slashed and scored to push the Lady Hawks' lead to double-digits, 17-7, but Mount St. Mary's answered with a 7-0 spurt to cut the deficit down to four points, 17-13, less than eight minutes before intermission.
Both clubs went on mini-runs for the next six minutes, but a jumper from the Mount's Carter tied the game, 24-24, with more than two minutes before halftime. With time waning, Subritzky made two freebies and gave UMES the advantage back before the break, 26-24.
For the Mount, they shot 76-percent (13-of-17) from the charity despite shooting only 35-percent (19-of-54) from the field. Carter led all scorers with 15 points on 5-of-9 shooting from the floor. Kathleen Belanger-Finn added 14 points and five boards in the victory.
Maryland Eastern Shore begins a four-game road swing with a pair of conference games. On Dec. 5, the Lady Hawks travel to Durham, N.C. where the North Carolina Central Eagles await. Tipoff is set for 2 p.m. Two days later (Dec. 7), UMES stays in the Tar Hill state to face MEAC Preseason Favorite North Carolina A&T. Game is slated for 5:30 p.m.
