PRINCESS ANNE, Md. - In their final home game of 2015, the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) Women's Basketball fell to the Old Dominion (ODU) Lady Monarchs, 69-52, inside the William P. Hytche Athletic Center.

With the loss, UMES dropped to 3-10 overall while the Lady Monarchs moved to 4-7 on the season.

Coach Fred Batchelor modified his starting lineup, inserting three new faces: seniors Chalyse Taylor (Louisville, Ky.) and Taylor Thompson (Chapel Hill, N.C.) and freshman Ciani Byrom (Winston-Salem, N.C.). Although the Lady Hawks shot only 26-percent (6-of-23) from the floor in the first half, Maryland Eastern Shore found rhythm in the second half as they shot nearly 42-percent (13-of-31).

Despite outrebounding the Lady Monarchs, 40-39, UMES could not capitalize from the charity stripe. Overall, Maryland Eastern Shore shot 52-percent (12-of-23).

Defensively, UMES held the Lady Monarchs under 40-percent (19-of-54) from the floor, but ODU made clutch three-pointers as they finished 40-percent (8-of-20) from downtown.

Senior center Taryana Kelly (North Brunswick, N.J.) registered her first double-double of the season, third overall, finishing with a career-high 15 points and a season-high 11 boards in 35 minutes of action, which was also a career high. Taylor chipped in a season-high 11 points and two boards in the loss.

With a double-digit deficit to open the second half, 36-17, the Lady Hawks came out and trimmed the margin back to single-digits on multiple occasions. Kelly's layup put UMES back in business, 43-34, with more than four minutes left in the third. But ODU answered and closed out the quarter on a 13-2 run and took a commanding lead into the final quarter, 56-36.

Maryland Eastern Shore sliced the margin as low as 14 points in the fourth, but the comeback would fall short as Old Dominion won, 69-52.

Other notable performances included Byrom recording 12 points, five rebounds, and a career-high five dimes. Thus, becoming the first true freshman to post five-plus assists since teammate Mariah McCoy (Rock Hill, S.C.) did the feat in Feb. 2014.

UMES opened the game on an 8-4 run, but ODU responded by scoring seven unanswered and took their first lead of the contest, 11-8. After one, the Lady Hawks trailed, 14-10.

Maryland Eastern Shore went nearly four minutes without scoring; therefore, allowing the Lady Monarchs to take advantage. Old Dominion ballooned their lead to double-digits with more than six left before intermission, 26-10. With time waning, senior guard TeAmber Burke (Washington, N.C.) connected on a jumper and gave UMES momentum into halftime, 36-17.

For the Lady Monarchs, Jennie Simms notched a game-high 19 points on 7-of-13 shooting. Destinee Young added 16 points and a team-high nine boards while Keyana Brown chipped in 12 points on 3-of-6 shooting from behind the arc in the victory.

Maryland Eastern Shore hits the road for their final tune-up before resuming conference play as they head back to Greensboro, N.C. to face UNC-Greensboro on Monday, Dec. 28. Tipoff is set for 5 p.m.
