DOVER, Del.- In their final road test, the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) Women's Basketball Team held on to secure a road win at rival Delaware State (DSU), 68-61. The victory gave UMES their first season sweep over DSU since the 2011-12 season.
Maryland Eastern Shore (11-15, 8-7 MEAC) outrebounded the Lady Hornets, 44-26, including 16 offensive boards. Furthermore, the Lady Hawks tallied 16 second chance points while Delaware State managed only six points.
Senior guard Jessica Long (Fort Washington, Md.) registered a team-high 18 points on 8-of-9 shooting from the charity stripe. South Carolina-native Mariah McCoy (Rock Hill) came off the bench and recorded 16 points on 60-percent shooting (6-of-10) from the floor.
After taking a halftime lead, 28-26, the Lady Hornets' Mikah Aldridge made a layup and tied the contest, 28-28. For the first 10 minutes in the second period, both squads went back-and-forth as they were deadlocked, 42-42, at the 9:57 mark. In the next three minutes, UMES got hot as they went a 13-3 run and took a double-digit advantage, 55-45.
Delaware State refused to back down as they make clutch shots down the stretch. With more than two minutes left, Alexis Udoji (Randolph, Mass.) made a layup to give UMES a five-point lead, 62-57, but back-to-back layups from the Lady Hornets' Tierra Hawkins and Amber Bogard trimmed the deficit, 62-61. Maryland Eastern Shore kept their composure as they finished the game on a 6-0 run to win, 68-61.
In the first half, both clubs were tied, 11-11, after more than six minutes of action. Delaware State created separation, going on a 6-0 spurt, 17-11. UMES answered and went on an 8-2 run to tie the contest, 19-19, with more than eight minutes before intermission. With less than 30 ticks remaining before the half, Maryland Eastern Shore held a five-point advantage until the Lady Hornets' Jade Washington nailed a long ball, 28-26.
Other notable Hawk performances included Udoji posting 10 points and seven rebounds whereas Taryana Kelly (North Brunswick, N.J.) added seven points and a team-high eight boards in the victory.
For the Lady Hornets (5-22, 2-12 MEAC), Bogard had a career-high 27 points after shooting 72-percent (13-of-18) from the field. Aldridge chipped in 15 points in the loss.
This Thursday (03/05), the Lady Hawks return to the William P. Hytche Athletic Center to take on in-state rival Morgan State for their season finale. Game-time is set for 5:30 p.m.
