HAMPTON, Va. - In the second of a three-game road swing, the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) Women's Basketball Team fell to the Hampton Lady Pirates, 71-43, inside the HU Convocation Center. With the setback, the Lady Hawks dropped to 7-13 (4-6 MEAC) overall whereas Hampton moved to 11-11 (7-2 MEAC) on the season.

Offensively, Maryland Eastern Shore struggled, shooting 37-percent (17-of46) from the floor. Senior guards Jessica Long (Fort Washington, Md.) and Shawnee Sweeney (Chester, Va.) were the lone Lady Hawks to post double-figures. Long had a team-high 12 points and three dimes. For Sweeney, the Virginia-native shot 50-percent (4-of-8) from the field, including three long balls. In her efforts, she set a new program record with most career three-pointers.

UMES was able to find some offensive rhythm in the second half as they shot 44-percent (12-of-27) in the period. With than 13 minutes left in the game, Alexis Udoji (Randolph, Mass.) made a layup to trim the deficit, 46-24. Hampton responded with a 21-12 run to increase their advantage, 67-36. Maryland Eastern Shore managed to score 22 points off the Lady Pirates' miscues, but it was too late as they lost, 71-43.

In the first half, Udoji's layup ended a 19-0 run by the Lady Pirates to start the game, 19-2. Hampton's suffocating defense forced 23 first half turnovers from the Lady Hawks. Sweeney's three-pointer cut the margin as low as 17 points, 28-11, but Hampton ended the half on a 12-3 run to take a double-digit halftime lead, 40-14.

For the Lady Pirates, Malia Tate-DeFreitas had a game-high 23 points and six assists in 34 minutes of action. Kyani White chipped in 13 points on 5-of-9 shooting from the floor while Ryan Jordan added 10 points in the victory.

On Monday (02/09), the Lady Hawks conclude its three-game road trip in Norfolk, Va. as the Norfolk State Spartans await. Tipoff is scheduled for 6 p.m.
