NORFOLK, Va. - In their third and final road contest of a three-game road trip, the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) Women's Basketball Team grabbed a big road victory against the Norfolk State Spartans, 60-50, inside Echols Hall. The win snapped a 23-game road losing streak, dating back to November 2013.
With the victory, the Lady Hawks improved to 8-13 (5-6 MEAC) overall whereas Norfolk State dropped to 8-14 (7-4 MEAC) on the season.
The contest featured offensive woes as both clubs shot under 30-percent from the floor. Despite a tough shooting night, Maryland Eastern Shore managed to contribute in other ways. UMES outrebounded the Spartans, 55-42, including 21 offensive boards. Furthermore, the Lady Hawks scored 18 second chance points, compared to Norfolk State's four points.
Junior Alexis Udoji (Randolph, Mass.) anchored the Lady Hawks' defense, posting a game-high four blocks. Udoji also had a team-high 10 rebounds and six points. Senior guard Jessica Long (Fort Washington, Md.) registered a team-high 13 points in the win.
Maryland Eastern Shore held a 12-point advantage at halftime, but the Spartans made a run. Norfolk State opened the second half on a 17-0 run to take the lead, 34-29. TeAmber Burke (Washington, N.C.) made a layup to end a seven-minute field goal drought, dating back to the first period, 34-31. More than 11 minutes remaining, Moengaroa Subritzky (Auckland, New Zealand) made two freebies and gave UMES the lead back, 37-36, but it was short-lived as Norfolk State's Kayla Roberts connected on a layup, 38-37.
For the next few minutes, both squads went back-and-forth and they found themselves deadlocked at 46-46. Burke's long ball sparked a 7-0 spurt for the Lady Hawks, giving them a seven-point lead, 53-46, with 4:03 remaining. Norfolk State made a late push, but UMES kept their composure by sinking several clutch freebies to win, 60-50.
Other notable Hawk performances included Burke coming off the bench to record 12 points. Subritzky fell a rebound shy of a double-double, ending her night with 11 points and nine boards in the victory.
Maryland Eastern Shore opened the game on a 7-2 run, capped off by Subritzky's three-pointer. Norfolk State battled back as they went on a 6-0 spurt to take their first lead of the game, 8-7. A Taryana Kelly (North Brunswick, N.J.) jumper, followed by a long ball from Mariah McCoy (Rock Hill, S.C.) put UMES back in control, 12-8, with more than 10 minutes before intermission. At the 3:09 mark, Long's two free-throws increased the lead to double-digits, 23-13. With time dwindling, Long's layup pushed the margin to 14 points, 29-15, but the Spartans' Brehanna Daniels nailed a jumper to make the halftime score, 29-17.
Spartan's Rae Corbo finished with 17 points, all in the second half. Koryn Lawrence chipped in 13 points while shooting 50-percent (6-of-12) from the field. Freshman Kayla Roberts played a game-high 36 minutes and recorded 16 boards, also a game-high, in a losing effort.
UMES returns to the William P. Hytche Athletic Center to face rt. 13 rival Delaware State for Homecoming. Tipoff is set for 2 p.m., followed by the men approximately at 4 p.m.
