Feb. 9, 2015 PRINCESS ANNE, Md. - Sophomore track & field athlete Jared Kerr (Brampton, Ontario, Canada) and senior women's basketball guard Shawnee Sweeney (Chester, Va.) were named the University of Maryland Eastern Shore Peninsula Regional Medical Center Athletes of the Week for the week ending on February 9th. Kerr is being named for the first time this year while Sweeney is being named for the second time.
Both athletes broke records in their respective sports this past week. Kerr knocked down a nearly ten year old record in the long jump, taking first at the Nelson Townsend Invitational with a jump of 7.76 meters. The mark beat Jason Daley's distance of 7.71 meters set in December 2005. Kerr is the third Hawk on the track team to earn a school record this season.
Sweeney nailed her 158th career three pointer in the first half against Hampton on Saturday, beating the old mark set by Toni Kennedy in 2006. She would add two more in the contest, and every triple Sweeney registers this year will add to that mark.
Kerr and the track will look for conference glory at the MEAC Championships in Landover, Md. this week while Sweeney and the women's basketball team continues their season Monday at Norfolk State.
