March 5, 2015

Box Score

PRINCESS ANNE, Md.- In the final regular season contest, the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) Women's Basketball Team fell to in-state rival Morgan State (MSU), 65-50, inside the William P. Hytche Athletic Center. With the setback, the Lady Hawks dropped to 11-16 (8-8 MEAC) overall whereas MSU improved to 11-18 (8-8 MEAC) on the season.

Despite the outcome, Maryland Eastern Shore outscored the Lady Bears in the paint, 30-12. Senior guard Jessica Long (Fort Washington, Md.) paced the Lady Hawks, tallying a team-high 17 points. With her efforts, she moved into 11th on the UMES all-time scoring list. Currently, the Maryland-native has 940 career points.

More than five minutes into the second period, Long made a freebie and trimmed the deficit to one, 40-39. Within the next six minutes, Morgan State got hot as they went on a 14-2 run to take a double-digit lead, 53-42. UMES fought back and cut the margin as low as six, 56-50, with less than six minutes left. Maryland Eastern Shore was unable to slow down the Lady Bears as they closed out the contest on a 9-0 spurt to win, 65-50.

UMES' bench squad scored 18 points, led by junior TeAmber Burke (Washington, N.C.) and sophomore Mariah McCoy (Rock Hill, S.C.). Both each registered eight points and combined to shoot 50-percent (4-of-8) from behind the arc.

Morgan State scored the first five points until Long made a layup to put the Lady Hawks on the board, 5-2. For most of the first half, the Lady Bears' dynamic duo, Braennan Farrar and Tracey Carrington, could not miss from beyond the arc. Both ladies combined to shoot 50-percent (7-of-14) from long range and gave MSU a 15-point advantage, 23-8, with more than 12 minutes remaining before halftime.

Within the next four minutes, Maryland Eastern Shore shaved the deficit to single-digits after a long ball from McCoy, 29-21. Farrar nailed another three-pointer to increase the lead back to double-digits, 32-21, with 6:50 left in the half. UMES battled back and closed out the half on a 10-1 run to make the halftime score, 33-31.

For the Lady Bears, Farrar and Carrington led the way as they combined for 52 points. Farrar had a game-high 30 points and shot 7-of-13 from downtown. Carrington ended with 22 points, including four long balls, in the victory.

Next week, UMES travels to Norfolk, Va. to compete in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Tournament for an opportunity to earn an automatic bid into the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Tournament. Date, time, and opponent is to be determined.
