PRINCESS ANNE, Md. - After nearly a two week layoff, the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) Women's Basketball Team returned to the hardwood to take on in-state rival Morgan State in Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) play. The contest was decided in overtime as the Lady Hawks were defeated, 77-69, inside the William P. Hytche Athletic Center.
Maryland Eastern Shore went on a 5-0 run and tied the contest, 69-69, with less than 90 seconds left in overtime. Morgan State reclaimed the lead and closed out the game on an 8-0 run to win, 77-69.
All nine Lady Hawks who played scored, led by freshman guard Ciani Byrom (Winston-Salem, N.C.). The North Carolina native finished with a team-high 17 points in a career-high 41 minutes of action. Fellow guard Moengaroa Subritzky (Auckland, New Zealand) notched her first double-double of the season, posting 10 points and 11 rebounds in a losing effort.
Freshman guard Keyera Eaton (Winston-Salem, N.C.) made two freebies and sparked an 8-0 run for the Lady Hawks; thus, giving UMES a six-point advantage with less than four minutes left in the third. After three periods, Maryland Eastern Shore held the lead going into the fourth, 47-41.
Subritzky made a layup and put UMES ahead, 51-43, with more than eight minutes left in the contest. Morgan State gradually chipped away and tied the game, 57-57, after a long ball from Tykyrah Williams. With 12 ticks remaining, the Lady Hawks held a 60-58 lead until Morgan State's Braenna Farrar connected on a jumper and forced overtime, 60-60.
Other notable Hawk performances included senior guard TeAmber Burke (Washington, N.C.) coming off the bench and tallying 12 points, six boards, and three dimes. Forward Alexis Udoji (Randolph, Mass.) added a game-high 12 boards, nine points, and five blocks in the loss.
Furthermore, the Massachusetts product moved into fifth on the all-time rebounding list, surpassing Yvette Cook (1982-86) Currently, Udoji has 622 boards in her career.
Maryland Eastern Shore took an early 13-6 lead after a quarter of play, thanks to a layup from Ra'Jean Martin (Jacksonville, Fla.). Midway through the second, UMES had their largest lead of the game after Subritkzy's layup, 25-14, with more five minutes before halftime. Morgan State fought back and closed out the half on a 14-3 run and tied the game at intermission, 28-28.
For the Lady Bears, Farrar had a game-high 27 points and seven boards. Williams came off the bench and registered 18 points, including a perfect 6-of-6 from the charity stripe. Lexus Spears ended her night with a double-double, recording 10 points and 12 boards in the victory.
This Saturday (Jan. 16), the Lady Hawks hit the road for a brief two-game road trip in Savannah, Ga. UMES will face the Savannah State Tigers in a MEAC Title Game rematch. Tipoff is slated for 2 p.m.
