Jan. 16, 2016 SAVANNAH, Ga. - In a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Title Game rematch, the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) Women's Basketball team could not slow down Savannah State as they were defeated, 60-42, inside Tiger Arena.
With the setback, UMES dropped to 3-13 (1-3 MEAC) overall while the Tigers moved to 5-10 (2-2 MEAC) on the season.
Offensively, the Lady Hawks struggled as they shot only 23-percent (14-of-61) from the floor. Defensively, Maryland Eastern Shore allowed the Tigers to shoot 48-percent (26-of-54) from the field.
Senior center Taryana Kelly (North Brunswick, N.J.) had team-highs in rebounds (9) and points (8) in 33 minutes of action. Forward Alexis Udoji (Randolph, Mass.) ended her night with seven boards, four points, and four rejections. The freshmen duo of Ciani Byrom (Winston-Salem, N.C.) and Keyera Eaton (Winston-Salem, N.C.) each chipped in six points in a losing effort.
Savannah State opened the second half on a quick 6-0 run, 39-21. UMES continued to battle, but the Tigers kept the pressure on as they held a double-digit lead into the fourth, 47-31. In the fourth, Savannah State did not let up as they held their largest advantage with 2:31 left, 58-39. Maryland Eastern Shore fell, 60-42.
For the Tigers, center Tiyonda Davis was the lone player in double-figures with a game-high 14 points. She also registered eight rebounds and six blocks in the victory.
Nearly five minutes into the game, UMES held the early advantage, 6-5, until Savannah State recorded the next five points and reclaimed the lead, 10-5. Maryland Eastern Shore fought back and pulled within one, 10-9, but the Tigers closed out the first quarter on an 11-3 run to take the lead, 20-12.
Shauntesha Bryant (Syracuse, N.Y.) scored on a layup from Moengaroa Subritzky (Auckland, New Zealand) and trimmed the margin down to five, 22-17, with 6:54 remaining before halftime. Savannah State responded and finished the half on an 11-4 spurt and took a 12-point advantage into intermission, 33-21.
On Jan. 18, the Lady Hawks conclude its brief two-game road swing in Orangeburg, S.C. where the South Carolina State Lady Bulldogs await. Tipoff is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
