PRINCESS ANNE, Maryland - Maryland Eastern Shore's hopes for a series win were dashed by a burst of hitting in game one and effective pitching in game two from Coppin State, as the Eagles swept the doubleheader by scores of 7-3 and 4-2. The Hawks fall to 3-13 (1-2 MEAC) while the Eagles improve to 3-11 (2-1 MEAC).
Sophomore Ryan Rotondo (Warwick, Rhode Island) was the leading hitter for The Shore, going 3-for-7 with two RBI's in the doubleheader. Senior Justin Somerville (New Windsor, Maryland) scored twice, and junior Dallas Culotta (Princess Anne, Maryland) had a multi-hit game in the opener.
On the mound, sophomore Zach Mills (Parksley, Virginia) pitched an effective 5 1/3 innings with no earned runs and four strikeouts, receiving a no-decision in the first game. Freshman Dwayne Marshall (Piscataway, New Jersey) registered four strikeouts over three scoreless innings in relief during the nightcap.
Maryland Eastern Shore was able the grab the lead in the opening game as they scored two runs in the third inning on a fielder's choice and a sacrifice fly. Coppin tied the game in the fifth and took the lead for good with a three spot in the seventh.
The Eagles led wire-to-wire in the second game, scoring all their runs in the first three innings. The Hawks rallied in the seventh down 4-1, scoring once before Coppin State was able to secure the victory.
The Shore hits the road for their annual spring break trip, with matchups against Duke on Tuesday and North Carolina Central on Wednesday.
