PRINCESS ANNE, Maryland - Looking to salvage a game against the Norfolk State Spartans, Maryland Eastern Shore baseball ran headlong into a fine pitching performance from the Spartans' Devin Hemmerich. The Hawks were able to cross home plate just once in the 7-1 loss.
Highlights for The Shore on Sunday included a gutsy six inning, three earned run outing from freshman starter Marty Tolson (Stafford, Virginia) and multi-hit games from juniors Jamison Trower (Chesterfield, Virginia) and Dallas Culotta (Princess Anne, Maryland). Freshman Blake Coleman (Woodbridge, Virginia) pinch ran in the eighth inning and scored the Hawks' only run.
Norfolk State's Devin Hemmerich was the key factor in the Spartans' victory. The senior took a perfect game into the sixth, retiring the first 17 batters he faced. He ended the day with a complete game victory and ten strikeouts.
The Spartans took the lead in the first inning and led wire-to-wire in the contest. They would score twice in the second, again in the sixth and three more times in the late innings.
With the loss Maryland Eastern Shore falls to 3-18 (1-5 MEAC) on the season while Norfolk State moves into a tie for first place with a record of 9-12 (4-2 MEAC).
The Shore challenges intrastate foe Mount St. Mary's Wednesday in Emmitsburg before returning home next weekend to host Route 13 rival Delaware State.
