April 2, 2017 Final Stats
NORFOLK, Va. - After Saturday's delay, Coach Sam Douglas and the University of Maryland Eastern Shore Softball team earned a split at Norfolk State (NSU).
Eastern Shore (9-14, 3-4 MEAC) held off the Spartans' late rally to win game one, 4-3; however, NSU (9-12, 2-3 MEAC) rebounded and took the nightcap in five, 14-6.
Despite being held to only four hits in game one, outfielder Sarah Maldonado (Carson, Calif.) delivered one of the biggest hits as she drilled a two-run shot over the right-center fence.
After three scoreless innings, Maryland Eastern Shore capitalized on NSU's miscue and took a 2-0 lead.
With two outs and a runner on second in the fifth, Maldonado belted a long ball to right-center and gave The Shore a 4-0 advantage.
Norfolk State responded in the sixth, scoring three times to cut the deficit down to one, 4-3.
NSU managed to get the lead-off hitter on in the seventh, but junior Adrienne Guerra (Monrovia, Calif.) kept Norfolk State off the board.
Guerra struck out a season-high 10 Spartans for her sixth victory of the season.
In the nightcap, Maryland Eastern Shore generated six runs on 11 hits. Three Hawks registered multi-hit games, led by senior Allison Anderson (Colorado Springs, Colo.). Despite the loss, Anderson picked up her first career homer with a two-run shot in the second.
The Shore attacked NSU early, thanks to RBI-singles from sophomore Sara Jo Whaley (Laurel, Del.) and freshman D'errica Toppin (Onacock, Va.), 2-0.
After a solo shot from the Spartans' Meaghan Barfield, Eastern Shore's momentum continued with Anderson's two-run blast, 4-1.
Bottom two, the Spartans exploded for six runs and took their first lead, 7-4.
NSU followed up, scoring four runs on four hits in the third to take a commanding 11-4 lead.
Maryland Eastern Shore fought back and trimmed the deficit with two runs in the fourth, 11-6, but the Spartans were too much as Norfolk State produced three more runs in the bottom half to win in five, 14-6.
Eastern Shore and Norfolk State will wrap up the series April 3 at NSU Softball Field. The rubber match is scheduled for 11 a.m.
