WASHINGTON, D.C. - In a must-win scenario, Coach Sam Douglas and the University of Maryland Eastern Shore Softball team fell short as they dropped its rubber match at Howard (HU), 6-3.
With the loss, Eastern Shore (11-25, 5-13 MEAC) saw their conference tourney hopes come to an end.
Offensively, The Shore generated 10 hits; however, only scored three runs as they stranded eight runners on base.
Sophomore catcher Sara Jo Whaley (Laurel, Del.) led the charge, going a perfect 3-of-3 with two RBIs. California natives Adrienne Guerra (Monrovia) and Sarah Maldonado (Carson) each recorded two hits in a losing effort.
Top three, Ciara Walters (Thurmont, Md.) put Eastern Shore on the board first with a RBI-single to right center, 1-0.
Howard responded with a two-run double from Deja Henderson and took the lead after three, 2-1.
Next inning, the Bison's Chloe Lyon delivered a grand slam and gave HU a commanding 6-1 advantage.
In the sixth, Maryland Eastern Shore fought back and scored twice on Whaley's two-run double to right field, 6-3.
Eastern Shore managed to get runners on in the seventh, but HU would keep the Hawks from scoring.
For HU (4-34, 4-14 MEAC), they ended their 2017 campaign on a high note with six runs on seven hits. Lyon delivered the biggest hit with a fourth-inning grand slam.
On May 2, Maryland Eastern Shore closes out the season at Drexel. The doubleheader begins at 2 p.m. in Philadelphia, Pa.
