MILLSBORO, Delaware — When the sun went down on Friday's Hawk Classic competition, the University of Maryland Eastern Shore bowling team knew that Saturday (Nov. 17) was another day. Plagued by inconsistency and missed spares, the Hawks (28-16, 8-2 MEAC) went to bed Friday night in 10
th place hoping that the fresh perspective of morning would bring strong play.
Something certainly happened over night as The Shore finished Saturday's five traditional matches with a 4-1 record and vaulted all the way to fourth place by virtue of a stellar pinfall total on the day.
Eastern Shore downed Fairleigh Dickinson 1,067-920 to open the morning and piled on Delaware State 1,064-960 before suffering a hiccup against Sacred Heart (996-867).
For the second day in a row sophomore
Paulina Torres (Ponce, Puerto Rico) led the way for the Hawks. Torres finished second overall individually posting a five-game total of 1,106 for a 221.2 average. Her high game of 269 came in the opening victory against Fairleigh Dickinson.
But that wasn't even the best single game for the Hawks on a day when everyone contributed as senior
Quianna Macares (Willemstad, Curacao) put up a 277 in the day's finale.
Junior
Brigitte Jacobs (Freeport, Illinois) averaged a 219.0 in five games including a 256 and 249 to open the day. She was fourth overall as an individual.
But the Hawks recovered quickly to beat Lincoln Memorial University 996-922 to finish out the scheduled matches. They then topped LMU again — this time a positional round — with a 1,141 against 1,094. The second victory came despite a 300 by LMU's Tyra Sanchez, but the 277 by Macares went a long way to negating the impact of the perfect game along with Torres' 235.
They got help from
Alexandra Hernandez (Maracaibo, Venezuela), who had an up and down day averaging 192.50 over four games, but finished strong with a 244 in the day's final win against LMU.
Cayla Hicks (Salem, Virginia) averaged a 186.5 including a 223 against the Hornets. Freshman
Isabel Hughes (Raleigh, North Carolina) averaged 177 over three matches, but put up a strong 195 against Lincoln Memorial in the first matchup.
Senior
Danielle August (Mililani, Hawaii) crushed the final three matches of the day with a 205.33 average with a high of 226 in the first win against LMU.
The Shore averaged a 205.8 per game on the day and came within 405 pins of first-place Vanderbilt and 142 pins back of second-place Sacred Heart.
The 1,141 was the team's highest total of the season so far and the biggest since Jan. 20, 2017 in a win against Tulane.
Bracket play begins at 10 a.m. on Sunday (Nov. 18) with a pair of best-of-seven Baker matches.
The Hawks will open with third-place Fairleigh Dickinson again to start the day.
