PRINCESS ANNE, Maryland — The University of Maryland Eastern Shore men's basketball team will begin their last road trip before Christmas in Rock Hill, SC as the Hawks take on the Winthrop University Eagles on Thursday (Dec. 20). The game has a morning tip of 11 a.m.
The Hawks (1-10) are coming off a 78-43 loss to Pittsburgh last Saturday (Dec. 15). Tyler Jones (Atlantic City, NJ) and AJ Cheeseman (Snellville, GA) each scored 16 points in the contest. Cheeseman suffered an upper body injury late in the game and will miss at least the next two games for Maryland Eastern Shore.
Thursday's game will mark the season debut of local product Colen Gaynor (Berlin, MD). Gaynor should bring size and athleticism to the wing to a depleted roster.
The Eagles are 5-4 on the season. Their last time out they set a school and Big South Conference record by making 24 3-pointers in a 109-66 win against Hiwassee College.
Senior Nych Smith leads Winthrop in scoring with 16.8 points per game and junior Josh Ferguson is averaging 11.9 points and a team high eight rebounds per contest.
The game can be heard locally on Fox Sports 960 AM WTGM and online at EasternShoreHawks.com. Pregame coverage begins at 10:45 a.m. with Will DeBoer on The Shore Sports Network.
Following Thursday's game, the Shore will head to the nation's capital to face American University on Saturday, Dec. 22. After Christmas, Eastern Shore will close out the calendar year with games at Virginia Tech (Dec. 28) and home versus Chestnut Hill (Dec. 31).
