Baltimore, MARYLAND — The University of Maryland Eastern Shore went from one of its best performances of the season in a win at Mount St. Mary's prior to the holiday break to a loss at George Mason that left head coach
Fred Batchelor searching for positives.
Following the 70-49 road loss, the team had less than 48 hours to work on turning things around before a 3 p.m. battle at University of Maryland Baltimore County Monday (Dec. 31).
If the Hawks (3-9) can find a way to win the holiday matchup they could start the new year and conference play on the right food. And that would be the positive Batchelor was hoping for.
The Retrievers (7-5) are also playing their final game before America East play and coming off a 73-68 victory against Morgan State on Dec. 20 that snapped a five-game losing streak. Junior Te'yJah Oliver dropped a season high 25 points and freshman Kayla Jackson chipped in a career high 16 points on 8-10 shooting with nine rebounds.
Sophomore Janee'a Summers leads the Retrievers on offense, averaging 12.2 points per game and a team best 6.3 rebounds. She has scored in double figures in nine of 12 games this year. Oliver is the only other Retriever in double figures at 10.9 points per contest. Junior Dominika Skrocka has made 35 three pointers on the year, shooting 43.2 percent from deep.
Senior point guard
Ciani Byrom (Winston-Salem, North Carolina) continues to lead the Hawks in scoring (14.6 ppg), assists (4.4) and minutes (34.4). classmate
Keyera Eaton (Winston-Salem, North Carolina) is second in scoring with 12 points a game after putting up double digits in each of that last four games. Sophomore
Bairesha Gill-Miles (Lexington, Kentucky) averages a team-high 7.1 rebounds and adds 9.0 points per game. She led The Shore in last year's home victory against UMBC with 19 points and eight rebounds.
Monday's contest is the second game of a men's and women's doubleheader. The Retrievers men will host Centenary at 1 p.m. and the women's game will follow.
