PRINCESS ANNE, Maryland -- The La Salle Explorers defeated Eastern Shore in two games Wednesday (Apr. 11) with scores of 7-4 and 7-3. The games marked the first contests the Hawks played on campus this season after playing in Salisbury due to field construction.
Both teams scored runs in the first inning of game one. La Salle scored three and the Hawks scored two. Senior Samantha Casarez hit a RBI single to right center to score junior Kayla Trekell. Junior Breana Florez scored the second run of the game for the Hawks after an error from the Explorers.
The Shore scored their other runs in game one in the fourth inning. The Hawks loaded the bases and were able to take a 4-3 lead after a wild pitch and passed ball brought freshman Nasya Goodman and sophomore Allison Gingrich home to score.
La Salle answered by scoring two runs in the top of the fifth, and a run in the sixth and seventh innings to secure a 7-4 victory.
In game two, both teams started slow. The game entered the fifth inning with the Explorers ahead 1-0.
The fifth inning saw La Salle get three runs, which included a two run homerun by Emma Schweigert. The Explorers scored another run in the sixth to take a 5-0 lead before the Hawks scored their first runs of the game that inning.
Junior Sara Jo Whaley hit a double to the left center gap that brought junior Mackenzie Brown, who went 3 for 4 in the game, and Florez in to score.
After La Salle added two more runs via homerun in the seventh, Eastern Shore rallied to make it interesting. After Goodman, freshman Jordan Robinson, and Brown all singled the Hawks had the bases loaded.
Next, Trekell battled at the plate and drew a RBI walk in a ten pitch at-bat. However, Florez grounded into a game ending double play as the next batter and the Explorers secured a 7-3 win.
The Hawks will be back in action this weekend (Apr. 14-15) at Hampton as they will play a doubleheader with the Pirates on Saturday and play one game on Sunday.
