PRINCESS ANNE, Maryland -- Eastern Shore was defeated by Howard University on Sunday (Apr. 29) by a score of 8-3. The game marked the end of the season for the Hawks (4-35, 1-17 MEAC).
Sunday's game also served as Senior Day for Samantha Casarez, Adrienne Guerra, and Mackenzie Brown. Casarez and Guerra will be graduating next month, while Brown will finish in December after spending 3 ½ years in Princess Anne.
The Bison started fast as they scored three runs in the top of the first. They held that lead until the bottom of the third when the Hawks tied the game.
The Shore started the inning by drawing two walks and forcing a pitching change from Howard. After another walk loaded the bases, Casarez drove in the first run of the game for the Hawks. She singled up the middle to bring sophomore Allison Gingrich across home plate.
After that, junior Heidi Smith executed a perfect bunt to score junior Sara Jo Whaley. Two batters later, Howard had a throwing error by their catcher Breanna Robinson that allowed Casarez to score and tie the game at three.
Howard answered right back with four runs in the top of the fourth to make the score 7-3. They scored another run in the fifth to bring the score to 8-3.
The Hawks threatened to score in the fourth when they got runners to second and third, but they came up empty. They also loaded the bases in the seventh inning and once again were unable to score.
Brown and Casarez each got two hits on their senior day. The other Hawks that got a hit were Whaley, Smith, juniors Breana Florez and Kayla Trekell, and freshman Zoe Jackson.
