TALLAHASSEE, Florida — The University of Maryland Eastern Shore saw its four-game winning streak come to an end at home on Monday (Feb. 14) at the hands of the visiting North Carolina A&T State Aggies.
By the end of the contest head coach
Fred Batchelor knew the team didn't have anything left in the tank. They had given their all, but unfortunately several factors combined to sink The Shore in the 51-49 loss.
The Hawks shot just 28 percent from the field and 21 percent from behind the arc, while turning the ball over 19 times and converting just 12-of-21 from the free throw line.
There were bright spots as a smothering defense held the Aggies (6-10, 3-0 MEAC) to just 35 percent from the field and forced 21 turnovers.
But in the end, Batchelor was left looking ahead to this weekend's trip to Florida for a pair of Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference battles. First up are the Rattler of Florida A&M (2-13, 0-3 MEAC) who are coming off a tough home loss of their own 54-50 against Savannah State.
Bachelor has been focusing the team on wining out at home and splitting on the road to finish the conference season where they want to be. So, after the A&T game they talked about making up for the home loss with an extra road victory.
The first step in that comes against a very young FAMU team with six freshmen.
The youth movement starts at the top with freshman point guard Mya Moye, who has already picked up three MEAC Rookie of the Week honors this season. She hails from the Mid-Atlantic Region and Washington D.C.'s Anacostia High School, where she was a two-time City Player of the Year.
Moye has started all 15 games for FAMU, leading the team in scoring overall at 11.9 points per game. She is shooting 33.3 percent (33 of 99) from three-point range, is averaging 2.3 rebounds, with 17 assists and 12 steals to date. She has led the club in scoring in eight of the team's 15 games so far this season.
The team is led on the inside by 6-foot-1 junior forward Dy'Manee Royal who led the Aggies with 17 points and 10 rebounds against Savannah. Moye chipped in 10 points.
Senior point guard
Ciani Byrom (Winston-Salem, North Carolina) leads the Hawks in scoring with 16.1 points per game and has reached double digits in all but one of the 16 games she has started.
She became the program's 9
th player to reach 1,000 points in the loss to A&T — a bittersweet milestone — but looks to pass Peggy Edwards (1989-93) in eighth with 1,003 points and Kristi Sheldon (1995-99) in seventh place with 1,028 if she has a strong road swing in the Sunshine State.
