Hawks Show Fight but fall in Five Sets to Rattlers

Eastern Shore Looks To Respond Versus Bethune-Cookman on Sunday

PRINCESS ANNE, Maryland — The University of Maryland Eastern Shore volleyball team was down two sets to none on Friday evening (Oct. 25) before clawing their way back in the match to force a fifth set before dropping the match to the Florida A&M University Rattlers. Scores for the match were 21-25, 21-25, 25-23, 25-22 and 10-15.

"The team made some good adjustments throughout the match," head coach Trevor Callarman said. "We have to come out in the beginning of the match with more energy, but I was glad to see the girls play with heart and come back."

Maryland Eastern Shore (8-16, 3-6 MEAC) found themselves in a hole at intermission and that led to a lineup adjustment by Callarman. He inserted sophomore Tijana Korosec (Belgrade, Serbia) as a setter to change up the flow of the offense. The lineup change helped catapult the Hawks to a win in the third set as the frame ended on a FAMU error.

In the fourth set, the lead went back and forth as Florida A&M held a 22-21 lead late. Junior Tatjana Trifkovic (Belgrade, Serbia) got a kill and an ace to give Eastern Shore the lead. Classmate Ilina Spasova (Sofia, Bulgaria) finished the frame with two kills to tie the match at 2-2 and force set five.

The Shore jumped out to a 4-2 lead in the fifth set. FAMU would respond by scoring the next four points and gain control of the set as a Hawks error would end the match.

Sophomore Stella Johnson (Newport News, Virginia) tied her career-high with 24 digs in the match. Fellow sophomore Alexis Lee (Wilmington, Delaware) led the squad in kills with 15.

The Hawks will now regroup as they face another conference opponent in Bethune-Cookman on Sunday afternoon (Oct. 27) at 1 p.m.
