Hawks Return Home and Sweep Norfolk State

Eastern Shore Dominates the Spartans

PRINCESS ANNE, Maryland In their first match at home in three weeks, the University of Maryland Eastern Shore volleyball team got their first conference win by sweeping the Norfolk State University Spartans 3-0 (25-21, 25-18 and 25-15) on Friday night (Oct. 4).

"It feels really good to get a win and I knew this would be an opportunity to do it," head coach Trevor Callarman said. "We have the best fans and the crowd was great tonight so it was good to see the girls take this win at home."

The Hawks (6-12, 1-2 MEAC) were dominate from the outset. Sophomore Stella Johnson (Newport News, Virginia) stepped to the service line to begin the match and she would not get off of it until Eastern Shore led 7-0. The Spartans would rally late in the set but they committed a service error to end the set.

The second and third sets followed much of the same script as Maryland Eastern Shore got out to early leads in each set and kept the lead. The only ties and lead changes happened in the final set in the first six points of the frame.

Junior Ilina Spasova (Sofia, Bulgaria) and sophomore Alexis Lee (Wilmington, Delaware) each had a hitting percentage over .500. Spasova finished with a game-high 14 kills at .591 and Lee had eight kills at .545. Senior setter Ivana Blazevic (Zagreb, Croatia) had a game-high 22 assists. Johnson would finish the match with a career-high six aces.

The Hawks will now face the defending MEAC champions Howard on Sunday afternoon (Oct. 6) at 3 p.m.

"Howard is a great team but we are going to be prepared for them," Callarman said. "There is no better time than after a win on our home court to have an opportunity to get a win off of them."
