PRINCESS ANNE, Maryland — The University of Maryland Eastern Shore volleyball team fell to the Howard University Bison in four sets on Sunday afternoon (Oct. 6). The scores were 19-25, 25-21, 14-25 and 21-25.
"Howard is definitely a good team and it was good to get a look at them early on," head coach Trevor Callarman said. "It is still the beginning of conference play, so we can sure up some things they were able to exploit and keep moving from there."
After dropping the first set, the Hawks (6-13, 1-3 MEAC) responded in set two. Junior Tatjana Trifkovic (Belgrade, Serbia) had a strong showing early in the frame on the service line to get Eastern Shore a 10-5 lead. Maryland Eastern Shore held off the HU rally late in the set as senior Ivana Blazevic (Zagreb, Croatia) got a kill to finish the set.
In set three, Howard gained control early and did not let up to take a 2-1 lead. The final set also saw the Bison get up early, but the Hawks would rally. The Shore faced a 17-24 deficit and made the final set interesting before an error ended the match.
Junior Ilina Spasova (Sofia, Bulgaria) led the match with 14 kills. Blazevic had 31 assists along with five kills. Senior Lidia Chery (Garfield, New Jersey) finished with a game-high four blocks.
Maryland Eastern Shore will now travel to Orangeburg, South Carolina to face South Carolina State University on Friday (Oct. 11). This will be the Hawks' first trip to SCSU since 2002.
