PRINCESS ANNE, Maryland — Win two matches and you are in.
That is the predicament that the University of Maryland Eastern Shore volleyball team is in as they head into their final two regular season matches this weekend. They will play at home against Morgan State on Friday (Nov.15) at 6 p.m. and Sunday (Nov. 17) versus Coppin State at 3 p.m.
The Hawks (11-17, 6-7 MEAC) are tied with the Delaware State University Hornets for fourth place in the MEAC northern division standings. Eastern Shore holds the tiebreaker between the two squads by virtue of sweeping the season series. So that means the simplest way The Shore can guarantee a spot in the tournament is to win both matches this weekend.
DSU faces Coppin State, who is in third place and one match ahead of the Hawks, Friday. Maryland Eastern Shore can clinch their spot against Morgan State with a combination of a win and Delaware State loss.
"We have had good practices this week so we are prepared to go out and play well this weekend," head coach Trevor Callarman said. "These matches are big ones but we are going to approach them the same way we have approached other matches all year."
Sunday's match will also serve as senior day for middle blocker Lidia Chery (Garfield, New Jersey) and setter Ivana Blazevic (Zagreb, Croatia).
Chery has been a member of the Hawks for two seasons after transferring in from Monroe College. She is one the Hawks' most improved players this season as she has nearly doubled her block total from a season ago.
Blazevic is a captain and four-year starter for the squad. She is the school's all-time leader in assists and is in the top five in school history for aces.
If the Hawks can clinch a spot in the MEAC Tournament, their first match of the tournament will be on Nov. 22 at Burr Gymnasium on the campus of Howard University.
