Hawks host Hoyas in pre-holiday proceeding

The Shore has never beaten Georgetown

PRINCESS ANNE, Maryland — The University of Maryland Eastern Shore dropped a tough home contest to Longwood on Thursday (Dec. 19), but must nonetheless turn around and face Big East member Georgetown on Saturday (Dec. 21) at 2 p.m.

Hawks coach Fred Batchelor is looking for his team to rebound in a big way following a loss where he though the squad lacked the necessary desire to beat a good team. His expectation was that The Shore (3-8) would follow a strong Friday afternoon practice with a much better showing on Saturday.

The two teams met in the second game of the season last year with the Hoyas (2-8) coming out on top 74-55 to take the advantage in the all-time series to 5-0.

Georgetown is led by 5-foot-9 graduate student Brianna Jones and her 10.9 points per game to go with 5.2 rebounds. Fellow grad student and backcourt mate Taylor Barnes is also putting up 10.9 points  to go with 2.3 assists and 1.9 steals.

Junior guard Amanda Carney (Old Bridge, New Jersey) continues to lead Eastern Shore in both scoring (12.4) and rebounding (5.3). She leads the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference in 3-pointers per game with 3.2, is No. 5 in 3-point percentage with .384 and No. 6 in defensive rebounds per game with 4.2.

Classmate Porsha Sydnor (Chicago, Illinois) leads the conference in assist-turnover ratio with 1.6 and is second with 4.4 assists per game.

Following Saturday's game, The Shore will be off until they travel to Charlotte on Dec. 28.
