PRINCESSE ANNE, Maryland — Following one of its most disheartening losses of a tough season so far, The University of Maryland Eastern Shore will have just one day to regroup and get ready for Mondays (Jan. 13) matchup with visiting North Carolina Central.
The game will mark the end of three straight at home for the Hawks. It's the only spot in the MEAC slate where they play three in a row at home.
They will look to turn around offensive woes that have plagued the inexperienced roster to different degrees all season with Saturday's performance being one of the worst.
"Some of it had to do with their defense, but free throws have nothing to do with defense and that is how the game went the entire time," Hawks coach Fred Batchelor said. "We just couldn't put the ball in the basket."
The Hawks (3-12, 0-2 MEAC) are shooting just 33% for the season and 28% in two conference games, but have won five straight against the Eagles.
North Carolina Central (4-11, 1-1) is led by experienced senior Paulina Afriyie (13.5 points per game, 7.5 rebounds) and junior Keiche White (11.5 ppg). But the emergence of 6-foot-1 freshman forward Anissa Rivera has been big as she has averaged 10.8 rebounds and 12.5 points over six games. She missed nine games due to injury returning for the team's MEAC opener against Florida A&M.
She put up 30 points and 20 rebounds in 47 minutes against FAMU and Delaware State.
The game will be broadcast on Facebook Live via the Eastern Shore Hawks Facebook account (@ESHawks).
