Hawks show little fight, fade late at Norfolk

The Shore travels next to South Carolina State

Box Score

NORFOLK, Virginia — The University of Maryland Eastern Shore suffered on of its more disappointing losses of the season as head coach Fred Batchelor wanted to put out an all point bulletin postgame as he looked for the team's "energy and enthusiasm" that he thought were lacking for much of a 68-45 loss to Norfolk State.

Things started off difficult against a talented Spartans team and got quickly more so as junior Bairesha Gill-Miles (Lexington, Kentucky) picked up her second foul just two minutes into the contest, while trying to draw a charge.

"I thought we had a meltdown," Batchelor said. "It started with the two fouls on Bunz early and then in the second half — down 10 — I thought we had a breakdown in the third quarter and it continued to break form there."

The Hawks actually knotted the game at 18-18 at the end of the first quarter. But the second quarter saw NSU (10-7, 4-0 MEAC) take a 36-26 lead into the half.

"At the end of the day, we gave up too many offensive rebounds even in the first quarter," Batchelor said. "We didn't play hard enough or tough enough to come in and beat a team as talented as Norfolk is right now."

Eastern Shore had already given Norfolk 22 second-chance opportunities in the first half — something Batchelor and the staff made clear at the break. But, after the half, The Shore began play by giving up three consecutive offensive rebounds.

The Hawks were held scoreless for 5:17 of the third quarter before Brooklyn Bailey (Rock Hill, South Carolina) scored back-to-back buckets.

Bailey finished with 12 points, Amanda Carney (Old Bridge, New Jersey) had 10 and Taylor Clayborne (Upper Marlboro, Maryland) had eight points and five rebounds.

"I was really disappointed in our energy and enthusiasm in the second half," Batchelor said. "It was like we were waiting for the game to be over with about 15 minutes to go. I'm extremely disappointed."

The Hawks (4-13, 1-3) will next travel to South Carolina State for a Monday, Jan. 20 contest at 5:30 p.m.

"We need to get better real quick and a lot of it is determination and heart," Batchelor said. "We just didn't play with a sense of urgency at all. It needs to change."
