The Shore goes undefeated on Day 2 at Northeast Classic

Bracket play begins on Sunday

CROYTON, Pennsylvania — The University of Maryland Eastern Shore (NTCA No. 6) put up a fantastic Day 2 at the Northeast Classic sweeping through five Traditional matches with two victories against National Tenpins Coaches Association Top 25 Teams — No. 5 Vanderbilt and No. 20 Lincoln Memorial.

"The lanes were tough again today," eastern Shore coach Kayla Bandy said. "Our strike percentage was good and we had nine-or-better on the first ball more frequently today than yesterday. We made a few changes to ball surfaces for the day anticipating the lanes being a little different and those changes worked well. I'm pretty proud of the girls' mentality today. They worked had all day and worked together!"

The Hawks (56-17, 12-0 MEAC) opened the day with a 901-889 victory against the Commodores, then tagged New Jersey City University 991-660. Next came a 968-860 victory against Tusculum. They finished off the day with wins against Lincoln Memorial (954-934) and Medaille (903-900).

Sophomore Isabel Hughes (Raleigh, North Carolina) led the Hawks with a 52% strike percentage, marked 82% of the time, knocked down 91% of single-pin spares. She had a five-game average of 202.20 — with a high game of 247 — which put her in ninth place as an individual.

"Isabel had another great day on the lanes," Bandy said. "She is throwing the ball great and is communicating so well with her teammates."

Freshman Brooke Roberts (Port Orange, Florida) finished 16th with a five-game average of 194.80. Brooke marked at a team-high 88% rate and made all her single-pin spares.
Senior Brigitte Jacobs (Freeport, Illinois) averaged 187.80 (31st), marked at an 80% rate and had a 46% strike percentage. Junior Paulina Torres (Ponce, Puerto Rico) posted a five-game average of 183.80 (41st), marked at 82% and picked up nine-or-better on her first ball 70% of the time.

"Brooke also had a pretty good day filling frames and converting all of her single pins," Bandy said. "She is also throwing the ball great and seeing success. Paulina and Brigitte May not have had the highest strike percentage or fill rate on the team, but they had a pretty consistent performance. I was proud of how they all really did today! Communication was great and we got better today as learned from our mistakes! And, we won our matches."

Bracket play begins on Sunday (Jan. 19) at 8.30 a.m., following practice. Eastern Shore earned the eighth seed in bracket play and will begin the day with NTCA No. 9 Youngstown State.
