BALTIMORE, Maryland — The University of Maryland Eastern Shore will be looking to continue the momentum it picked up in a road win at Morgan State on Saturday (Feb.8) as it faces off with Coppin State (0-22, 0-10 MEAC) on the road.
"I think its huge," Hawks coach Fred Batchelor said. "I told the girls momentum is precious so we need this. We need to continue to feel good about what we have been able to do in our last game and carry it over to this one. This is a very dangerous team that is struggling to find a win."
The Hawks shot 47% from the field against the Bears — the second best number of the season — while Coppin shot just 20% from the field against North Carolina Central the last time out.
But the Eagles have some talented players including senior forward Chance Graham who is averaging 10.9 points, 9.3 rebounds and 1.5 steals per contest.
Coppin is averaging just 47 points per game this season, but the Hawks have struggled on offense most of the season as well averaging 53 points per game. Rebounding could be key in the matchup as it was at Morgan where the Hawks held a 45-31 advantage helping offset the 21 turnovers they committed.
The Shore also shot a season high 94% from the free throw line 15-of-16 last time out along with 30% from behind the arc. While it could be hard to maintain those numbers, Batchelor is looking for the same fire out of his team he was for a full game against Morgan.
"It's always tough because I don't think they'll not get a victory this year and we don't want to be the victim of that," Batchelor said. "We have to play with the same energy that we had at Morgan and the same enthusiasm. I think the energy in the warmup that we had before the game let to that, so hopefully that will continue. It's now or never at this point in the season, so I am optimistic that we are going to take this and roll with it at the right time of the year."
