Box Score GREENSBORO, North Carolina — The University of Maryland Eastern Shore came into Monday's matchup at North Carolina A&T State knowing that to be successful it would need to limit the Aggies' possessions.
But the Hawks were outrebounded 57-37, allowed 23 offensive rebounds and turned the ball over 20 times in a 72-57 loss despite being within three points 53-50 at the end of the third quarter.
"It was all about the possessions — extra possessions and offensive rebounding," Hawks coach Fred Batchelor said. "We had five offensive rebounds, they outrebounded us and throw in 20 turnovers. At the end of the game, that comes back to haunt you. At some point, it's like burying the dead in your back yard. You have to deal with the consequences. That's what we were doing the whole night. You can get away with it for a while, but them when it's time to sell the property it kills your property value."
Sophomore Brooklyn Bailey (Rock Hill, South Carolina) hit a 3-pointer at the end of the third quarter to bring the Hawks within 53-50, but things went down hill quickly. The Hawks (5-21, 2-11 MEAC) converted just 2-of13 shots from the field (15%) and was 2-for-3 from the line. There was a five-minute scoring drought by The Shore during the fourth.
Meanwhile, A&T was 6-of-13 from the field in the period and converted 5-of-12 from the line.
"We had a couple of breakdowns defensively and not being able to convert hurt us," Batchelor said. "I thought we got stifled on offense and they did a good job of mixing some stuff up defensively to keep us on our heels and not let us get comfortable."
Bailey finished the game with 19 points, three rebounds, an assist and two steals.
Freshman Mya Thomas (Chesapeake, Virginia) finished the game with 10 points, two assists and a steal, but was held scoreless in the second half. Adrienne Jones (Baltimore, Maryland) chipped in 11 points, a pair of rebounds and a pair of steals.
The Aggies (18-8, 10-4 MEAC) were 19 of 32 from the field. In the last three games, Hawks opponents have attempted 97 free throws to just 47 by Eastern Shore.
The Hawks will return home for Saturday's (Feb. 29) homecoming matchup with Delaware State at 2 p.m. Just three regular season games remain for The Shore.
