Hawks face tall task at Howard in final road contest of regular season

Jones has reached double digits in scoring in seven straight

WASHINGTON, D.C. — The University of Maryland Eastern Shore will be trying again to put together its first win streak of the season when it faces Howard (14-13, 6-8 MEAC) Monday (March 2) at 5:30 p.m. at Burr Gymnasium.

The Hawks (6-21, 3-11 MEAC) are coming off a big Homecoming victory against Delaware State on Saturday (Feb. 29) and are looking to build momentum heading into next week's Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Tournament.

During the last meeting — on Saturday (Jan. 4) — Eastern Shore was within two points of Howard University, 49-47, with 2:51 left in the third quarter at the William P. Hytche Athletic Center. But a 22-3 run over roughly the next six minutes of the game put the Hawks (3-11) in a hole they couldn't get out of in a 79-58 loss. Brooklyn Bailey (Rock Hill, South Carolina) led The Shore in scoring with 16 points and junior Amanda Carney (Old Bridge, New Jersey) had 15. Bairesha Gill-Miles (Lexington, Kentucky) — seeing her first action since getting injured during the first half at UNC Greensboro — put up 10 points in 16 minutes. Kenetria Redfern (Cheektowaga, New York) led the Hawks with seven rebounds, while Ksenia Popovich (Moscow, Russia) pulled down six.

The Bison have been missing senior guard Sarah Edmond since Jan. 18 when she was lost to injury. That has put more pressure on senior guard Ayona William who has stepped up and is averaging 14.5 points per game, while junior guard Jayla Thornton has also picked up the slack averaging 13.1 points per game.

The Hawks have been led lately by Adrienne Jones (Baltimore, Maryland) has reached double digits in scoring in seven straight contests. She is averaging 11.2 points during MEAC play, but no Hawks averages double digits in scoring for the season.

The Hawks will return home for a Thursday (March 5) Senior Night affair at the William P. Hytche Athletic Center against Coppin State.
