Box Score EMMITSBURG, Maryland — The University of Maryland Eastern Shore fell behind 44-29 in the first half at Mount St. Mary's Saturday (Dec. 18) behind 11-of-17 shooting from 3 by the Mountaineers and never recovered. The Hawks (4-7) briefly cut the advantage to single digits in the third quarter, but eventually suffered an 82-65 loss.
"I'm extremely disappointed in the way we played today from the beginning to the end," Hawks coach Fred Batchelor said. "I'm really frustrated with this team right now and trying to figure out how to motivate them. Not to take anything away from Mount St. Mary's who I thought played one of the best games of the year against us so far. If they play like that they'll be tough for anybody to beat."
The Mountaineers (2-7) converted on seven of their first nine shots from behind that arc and got out to an 11-point lead in the first quarter.
"They made 11 threes in the first half, when we started in a man-to-man defense," Batchelor said. "A kid that shoots 16% from three goes 6-for-9. It was just one of those days for them and I thought that we kind of wilted under it. I thought we tried to show a little fight, but it just wasn't enough and we've got to get back to the drawing boards. We have work to do."
With 2:46 left in the third, the Hawks cut the lead to 8 (53-45) on a Cache' Wilson (Baltimore, Maryland) layup, but a 13-4 run pushed the lead back to 17.
Mya Thomas (Chesapeake, Virginia) led The Shore with 14 points to go with three assists and a pair of rebounds. Wilson chipped in 10 off the bench. Bairesha Gill-Miles (Lexington, Kentucky) led the Hawks with seven rebounds to go with eight points.
Eastern Shore will next play at East Carolina on Tuesday Dec. 21 at 3 p.m.
"We have to figure it out," Batchelor said. "We have to go to ECU and we need to play a lot better than that top to bottom. I have to figure it out. It falls on me."
