Hawks struggle after good start at ECU

The Shore shot just 36% from the field

Box Score

GREENVILLE, North Carolina — The University of Maryland Eastern Shore had a good start to Tuesday's (Dec. 21) contest at East Carolina University, trailing just 21-18 after the first quarter. However, the Pirates (7-6) Went on a 9-2 run to end the second and then started the third quarter with a 20-2 run on the way to a 85-57 victory.

"The thing is that you have got to score," Hawks coach Fred Batchelor said. "We had 8 points in the second and four points in the third. The difference in what I saw from the first quarter was that we didn't put the ball in the basket."

The Hawks (4-8) did not make a field goal in the third quarter (0-for-10) and turned the ball over 12 times.

"The second quarter we weren't shooting well and we're down 16 at the half," Batchelor said. "You can only hope that you come out and hit some. I thought we got good shots. There was nothing that they were doing that was bothering us. We had seven turnovers in the first half. I thought when things didn't start very well in the third, that we started falling apart a little bit from the inside. That led to bad plays which steamrolled into a 20-point loss in the third."

In the fourth quarter, The Shore scored 27 points as the reserves outworked the ECU bench, while holding them to 19 points.

Angelique Taylor (Wachapreague, Virginia), Cache' Wilson (Baltimore, Maryland), Jamaya Blanks (Greensboro, North Carolina), Zamara Haynes (Philadelphia, Pennsylvania), Asia Pearly (Greensboro, North Carolina), Ariana Seawell (Bronx, New York) and JaPria Grady (Washington, D.C.) all played in the fourth.

"Coming out focused at halftime, coming out determined was something that we lacked and it cost us," Batchelor said. "In the fourth quarter, I appreciate the effort of those kids that came in who sit and don't play much. They are the foundation of our program in the future, so I was happy with the way we started and the way we finished. But we have some work to do."

Amanda Carney (Old Bridge, New Jersey) led Eastern Shore with nine points, but scored them all in the first quarter. Haynes and Taylor added eight points apiece. All of Taylor's points came in the fourth quarter. Bairesha Gill-Miles (Lexington, Kentucky) pulled down a team-high seven boards.

The Hawks are scheduled to return to campus after the holiday, in time to get in some practice before another road trip to Morgantown, for a showdown with West Virginia University on Dec. 28 at 7 p.m.
