Hawks find growth in 4th quarter of loss to George Washington

UMES returns home to face Washington College Saturday

Box Score

WASHINGTON, D.C. — The University of Maryland Eastern Shore struggled early against George Washington (1-1) on Thursday (Nov. 10), but found their way a bit late in the game. The Hawks (0-2) used a 17-4 run in the fourth quarter to chop into the Colonials lead before falling 65-50.

"It got a little ugly at one point because we were struggling scoring and turning the ball over," Hawks coach Fred Batchelor said. "We're just young and we are just doing a lot of growing. That's very experienced with some high-level transfers who were fifth-year kids. I thought we grew and showed a lot of toughness down the stretch and played with some character and pride because it got away from us a bit at one point."

Junior Zamara Haynes (Philadelphia, Pennsylvania) led the way for the Hawks with 19 points, seven rebounds, two steals and an assist in 35 minutes.

"She fought," Batchelor said. "She stayed scrappy and she showed a lot of maturity tonight. I told her that her ability to keep her head in the game and get the kids to continue to fight was the difference in us walking out of there with at least our pride.

Senior Mya Thomas (Chesapeake, Virginia) finished with 11 points, three steals and an assist and turned the ball over just once in 32 minutes.

"I thought she hit some shots for us," Batchelor said. "And having just one turnover was really good."

Freshman Ashanti Lynch (Hookerton, North Carolina) pulled down a team-high eight rebounds to go with four points, three assists and a steal.

The Hawks were 13-of-13 from the free throw line and turned it over just 15 times, while forcing 19 GW turnovers. The Colonials won the battle on the glass 45-32. GW also hit 10-of-29 from behind the arc, while the Hawks went 1-of-17.

"We have too much to learn and to grow, but they give you things to feel good about and now we just have to build off of that," Batchelor said.

UMES will return to action on Saturday (Nov. 12) when they host Washington College for a Homecoming matchup at 2 p.m.

"It is always nice to be home, especially with a young team," Batchelor said. "We want to take advantage of being home and put on a good show for ourselves as well as for our community and our university. We are looking forward to it and it's just nice to be home after a five-day road trip."
