Hawks face next test at the NEC’s Fairleigh Dickinson

Quick road trip precedes home contest with Virginia Union

PRINCESS ANNE, Maryland — The University of Maryland Eastern Shore faces off with another veteran squad on Sunday (Nov. 27) when they face Fairleigh Dickinson, at Stratis Arena inside the Rothman Center at 5 p.m.

"They are experienced, which is a little bit of kryptonite for us right now," Hawks coach Fred Batchelor said. "We gotta learn and we are learning quickly. It is going to be challenging because of that experience. They have a good inside/outside attack offensively and they are very deep."

Junior forward Chloe Wilson leads the way for the Knights with 15.8 points and 6.2 rebounds per game this season, while sophomore guard Elle Fajardo is second on the team with 13.5 points per game.

"They are similar to a Drexel team, where they have two kids giving them a lot of production and the other ones are just experienced," Batchelor said "But they are 4-2, so we need to get one of their wins. We are capable of it, but we are struggling with learning how to win and preparing to win.

"It's not like we are terrible at it. It's just that we are not completely there. I see a lot of growth with this group so far — probably more than any other group I have had — But we have so far to go because of our lack of experience and our inability to make shots from the perimeter right now."

The Hawks (1-4) have found themselves trying to manufacture other ways to be successful. That has included a use of pressure defense to supplement the scoring a bit with some easy baskets off turnovers.

Batchelor said that he is also learning and approaching the game, the roster and evaluating its progress differently than any other team he has ever had. That's because the progress so far reminds him of the upside in this team that he has to find a way to nurture and continue to develop.

"I told them that we aren't going to focus on mistakes,' Batchelor said. "I want to focus on effort. I told them to give me all the effort they have and we'll learn from there. Let's fail diving as opposed to falling. We want to dive into this and this is just another opportunity for us to get better in the early part of the season."

After the game, the Hawks will return home for a 6 p.m. home contest on Tuesday (Nov. 29) against Virginia Union.
