PRINCESS ANNE, Maryland — The University of Maryland Eastern Shore played its worst game of the season on Sunday at Fairleigh Dickinson, putting up just 41 points and struggling in all aspects of the game. It was the type of loss that makes you want to step back and take stock of where you need to go from there. However, the Hawks don't have time for that as they play host to Division II Virginia Union (4-2) on Tuesday at 6 p.m.
"I think again this game is more about us and coming out ready to play," Batchelor said. "If anything, hopefully we learn something from that horrible experience we just had. Hopefully we can respond playing at home."
During Monday's practice, UMES was set to watch some film and go through their preparation for the Panthers. The Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association squad boasts some talented players including junior Ny Langley, a 5-foot-10 forward who transferred from Duquesne. She averages 16.3 points and 10.7 rebounds per contest.
But despite who lines up on the other side of the floor, Batchelor knows Tuesday's game is more about his team and how they react.
"We just need to play better," Batchelor said. "Our numbers aren't very good. We have to do a better job of everything, especially coming back to our home court. It was a tough opponent we played at FDU. They are a very well coached team and we struggled matching them. They were so far ahead. That was probably the best team we have faced all year — not the most talented, but the best."
The Knights started three seniors, a graduate student and a junior, which highlighted the Hawks' inexperience even more than the team's previous six games. The Hawks have just one player in the starting lineup with more than one year of experience — Mya Thomas (Chesapeake, Virginia) who is an academic senior, but is in her third season on the court.
"We just have a lot of learning and our ability to bounce back and be resilient is huge," Batchelor said. "Tomorrow is more about resiliency. It's not what happened to you, but how you respond to it. I'm up for it. I just have to make sure they are."
This will be a tough week for UMES as the team will face another quick turnaround following Tuesday's game. They will then travel to Navy on Dec. 1 and James Madison on Dec. 4.
