The Shore stands 8th at Music City Classic

Hawks go 4-1 on opening day in Smyrna

PRINCESS ANNE, Maryland — The University of Maryland Eastern Shore had a pretty good day to start the Music City Classic in Smyrna, Tennessee going 4-1 and standing in eighth place in total pinfall after five Team Baker matches.

But on Saturday (March 19) they expect to do better.

"I think we bowled really well today," Hawks coach Roger Petrin said. "But I can tell you right now that the girls think there are more pins out there. None of them were satisfied with the results after we struggled in the last two sets."

The National Tenpin Coaches Association No. 16 Hawks (67-44, 11-5 MEAC) opened with a 995-830 win against Aurora University and followed that up by topping No. 15 Tulane 1067-952

The third match saw Eastern Shore top host No. 4 Vanderbilt 1044-1023. A victory against Tusculum (940-871) was the last of the day before the Hawks fell to Alabama State 1015-969 in the last match.

"The last two sets were tough for us," Petrin said. "It was a transition that occurred that we didn't make big enough moves. While we were catching up to the transition we had a couple missed spares here and there, but actually not a ton. Our single-pin percentage today was 92% as a team and our overall makeable percentage was around 84%."

No. 3 Nebraska, No. 6 North Carolina A&T State and No. 9 Youngstown State are all currently out of the Top 10 in total pinfall.

Saturday features five Traditional team games beginning at 9:30 a.m.

"The goal is to wake up do the same thing we did today, but just do it a little better," Petrin said.
