PRINCESS ANNE, Maryland – It's the culmination of the hard work and training for the University of Maryland Eastern Shore track and field team starting on Sunday, February 19 in Virginia Beach, Virginia with the meet wrapping up on Tuesday with the medley races.
Several Hawks are poised to do well at the event, with the men's sprinters holding multiple top-five positions, as well as
Indya Hansley and
James Perkins looking to perform well in throwing events. Head coach
Sharlene Milwood-Lee expects a few of the women's runners to build confidence and to surprise a few onlookers.
"We want to bring everything to the track and execute (in our) races," Milwood-Lee said.
In the 400m, three Hawks currently rank in the top four of the MEAC –
Jahlahnee Watkins,
Janoi Brown and
Ashane Beckford – with Watkins and Beckford both being returning medal winners to the meet after strong finishes in 2022. The trio also combined for the second fastest 4x400m time in the conference this winter.
Watkins,
Mahki Herring and
Radjae' Reid are also candidates to place well in shorter sprints with solid times in the 60m and 200m earlier this season.
"Overall, I think the men can improve on their seventh-place finish from last season," Milwood-Lee said.
While no Hawk women hold top times on the track, Milwood-Lee still expects to see new personal records from the short sprinters, particularly in the 400m. Mackenzie Evans and
Spencer Settle have progressed through the season and from their 2022 performances, and newcomer
Chloe Lucas also has turned in solid times.
In the field, Hansley and Perkins have been great for the Hawks. Hansley currently holds the fifth and seventh best distances in the hammer and weight throw, Perkins holds the fourth and first best distances in the same events.
