VIRGINIA BEACH, Virginia – The University of Maryland Eastern Shore track and field squad began their season at the Virginia Beach Spring Invitational starting on Friday (March 17) and wrapped things up with a few podium places on Saturday.
On the track for the women,
Shy-Ann Campbell grabbed first in the 800m with a 2:28.13 race and
Chloe Lucas was not far behind in third at 2:32.27. Shennell Simms also placed for the Hawks, taking third in the 1500m at 5:20.32.
In the field,
Indya Hansley was impressive during her shot-put attempts, getting first place at the meet with an 11.92m throw on her final toss. She also took fourth in the discus at 33.50m.
The men were led by
James Perkins' first place throws in both the shot put and discus, beating out the next best shot by over a meter at 15.16m and by over two meters in the discus at 44.30m.
Destiny Emuze was impressive in his first race as a Hawk, finishing second in the 800m at 2:02.91 – the winner of the race was George Erazo, the coordinator for athletics at Anne Arundel Community College.
The Hawks head to one of their biggest meets of the season at the Weems Baskin Relays hosted by the University of South Carolina on Friday, March 24 into Saturday. Last spring
Janoi Brown was the star, taking first in the 400m by over a full second at the event.
