Shore Women Show Out at Penn Relays

Hawks Track and Field Shows Strength in Relay Races

PHILADELPHIA, Pennsylvania – The Maryland Eastern Shore had a strong showing at the annual Penn Relays this past weekend, having a banner day in the women's 4x100 and 4x400, along with the usual great jump by Atinuke Shittu in the triple.

"The team did exceptionally well this weekend, head coach Damion Drummond said. "Whenever you can make the finals in any capacity it's a great statement piece for your program."

The women's 4x100 team was the highlight for the Hawks, taking second in a crowded field with one of their best times of the season – running a 46.77. The team was young with sophomores Malea Sharps and Jazmine Thomas, as well as freshmen Specer Settle and Mackenzi Evans.

"The women's 4x100 relay was fueled by a very strong start from Jasmine Thomas," Drummond said. "Malea Sharps was able to hold off a late charge from the third place team to secure our second place medals."

In the 4x400 the women's team of Evans, Settle, Asshani Robb and Adekansola Adewemi qualified for the finals, coming in sixth during the race.

Shittu turned in the best jump of her senior season with a 12.12m attempt, good for fifth out of 31 competitors.

"It was beautiful to see the joy on her face," Drummond said.

Unfortunately, the men's 4x100 were disqualified following a mistake late in the race after leading for the majority.

"I'm not concerned at all as they are very aware of the mistakes made and I'm confident the corrections will be made for a successful run in the MEAC two weeks from now," Drummond said. "They led three quarters of the race but missed making finals due to faulty time at the third baton exchanged between Goslee and Witchell."

The Hawks will have time to rest up and continue honing their events, with the next meet being the Mid-Eastern Atlantic Conference Championships starting on May 12 – it is to be held at Norfolk State University.
