PRINCESS ANNE, Maryland – After spinning a complete game against longtime rival Coppin State on Friday, April 7 in a 5-1 victory, senior
Noah Covington picked up the Northeast Conference Pitcher of the Week award.
It's the second time the Hawks have had a Pitcher of the Week with
Evan Nibblett earning the honors during Week Two.
"It's an honor, and to have the boys behind me every day means a lot," Covington said.
Covington did not allow an earned run in his start while tying his career high at nine batters sitting down due to strike outs. Although the Seaford, Delaware native allowed a walk in his start, he still leads the nation in walks allowed per nine innings at .33 and is tied for first in strike outs to walks at 27:1.
"Definitely knew this series meant a lot after losing to them last season in the tournament," Covington said.
Also earning an award was outfielder
Jason Brown, getting named as a Prime Performer. During the week Brown hit .538/.600/.923 over 13 at-bats with four RBIs, two doubles and a home run.
"I just wanted to come out with that grit and fire," Brown said. "Let it be known that I am electric! Wanted my guys to feed off that energy to play a solid nine for each game the whole week."
The Hawks are back at it on Wednesday, April 12 against the United States Naval Academy at home starting at 3:00 p.m. in Salisbury. Last season UMES dropped a 5-7 heartbreaker to the Midshipmen – starters have not yet been announced for the midweek.
