Hawks Drop Conference Game to Spartans in Straight Sets, Fall to 1-2 in MEAC Play

SUMMARY

The Maryland Eastern Shore Hawks were defeated by the Norfolk State Spartans, 3-0, in a match in which the Green and Gold trailed only three times throughout the entire contest.

THE SCORE

Maryland Eastern Shore Hawks - 0

Norfolk State Spartans - 3

(18-25, 13-25, 15-25)

HOW IT HAPPENED

Attack errors plagued the Maroon and Grey throughout the match, especially in the first two sets. The Hawks committed 11 attack errors in 35 total attempts in the opening frame. Similarly, UMES fell victim to 11 attack errors in 34 total attempts in the second set, limiting their chances to sustain scoring runs. As a result, the Hawks led just one single time throughout the entirety of the first two sets. Inversely, the Spartans were constantly on target with their swings, making just three attack errors in the entire match. With each of those three mistakes happening in the first set, Norfolk State made zero attack errors in the second and third frames. This factor made it extremely difficult for UMES to side out consistently.

In addition, a strong effort on the service line aided the Green and Gold to victory. The Spartans scored 11 service aces against the Hawks, keeping Norfolk State in control from first serve to match point.

THE NUMBERS

This is just the third loss for UMES against Norfolk State in their last 21 matchups in the series.

In her increased defensive role, Isil Yilmaz tallied 13 digs. This is her second double-digit dig match of the season.

While Norfolk State hit at a .368 attack percentage for the match, UMES only mustered one set with an attack percentage above .000.

Ranyla Griggs continued her strong run of form, generating 12 kills. This is her fifth consecutive match with double-digit kills.

Anisa Dorlouis posted 22 assists against Norfolk State. This is her fourteenth consecutive match with double-digit assists.
