HOW IT HAPPENED
In the first set, the Hawks narrowly lost by two points despite strong contributions from their attackers. Ikemefuna, freshman
Lilliana Montes, and senior
Ranyla Griggs posted four and three kills, respectively. Tied at 20, Dorlouis executed a clever attack that landed in the middle of the Eagles' defense, giving the Hawks a late lead. However, Coppin State rallied with three unanswered points to take the set, 25-23.
The second set saw a shift in momentum as UMES clinched a 25-23 victory. Dorlouis and the Hawks' offense thrived, with the Gainesville, Florida, native recording 17 assists and Ikemefuna reaching nine kills. The duo's strong play propelled the Hawks to win the set.
Set three featured a combined 58 points from both teams, with UMES taking the set and a 2-1 match lead. Griggs and Dorlouis each closed the set with eight kills.
Coppin State leveled the match in the fourth set, edging the Hawks 25-20. In the decisive fifth set, UMES struggled, scoring only eight points to Coppin's 15.
THE NUMBERS
- This was Dorlouis' third match of the season with over 30 assists, following her season-high of 41 assists against Morgan State on Sept. 27. She also reached a season high in blocks with seven.
- Junior Valeria Matias led the team with 14 digs.
- Freshmen Alivia Proctor, Lilliana Montes, and Gabrielle McCoy made significant contributions, with Proctor totaling 26 receptions, Montes finishing with eight kills, and McCoy adding four kills.
